Police in Kabale District are investigating a fatal hit-and-run road accident that left one person dead and another injured.
The deceased has been identified as Naboth Owomugabe, a 20-year-old boda boda rider and resident of Nyakayenje Village, Bubare Sub-county, Rubanda District.
The injured, Henry Byamukama, 18, a mechanic from Kagarama Village, also in Rubanda District, was a passenger on the motorcycle at the time of the incident.
The accident occurred on Sunday at around 5:00 a.m. at Mwanjari along the Kabale-Katuna highway in Kabale Municipality.
According to police reports, the crash involved a Toyota Premio vehicle with registration number UA 325AL, whose driver is yet to be identified after fleeing the scene, and a motorcycle being ridden by Owomugabe, with Byamukama as the passenger.
It is alleged that the Premio, which was traveling from Kabale town toward Katuna, was overtaking another vehicle when it collided head-on with the motorcycle, which was coming from the opposite direction. Owomugabe died on the spot, while Byamukama was rushed to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for medical attention.
The driver of the vehicle remains at large. Meanwhile, the deceased’s body was transported from the scene to his home, and the motorcycle was reportedly removed by unknown individuals and has not yet been recovered.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, confirmed that the scene was visited and documented and a statement was recorded from the injured victim.
Maate said that efforts to trace and impound the vehicle are ongoing.
