The State Minister for Northern Uganda, Dr. Kenneth Omona, has urged the people of the Acholi sub-region to invest in livestock in addition to engaging in other forms of commercial farming.
Dr. Omona made the remarks while addressing leaders from the Acholi sub-region at a meeting held at the Kitgum District Council. The meeting was organized by the Office of the Prime Minister to follow up on Presidential Executive Order No. 3.
The minister emphasized that livestock investment presents significant opportunities for income generation, food security, and climate resilience.
He highlighted that livestock can serve as a tangible asset with potential for a strong return on investment.
Dr. Omona also noted that livestock farming has the potential to sustainably enhance the production and productivity of small holder farmers, thereby strengthening the livestock systems in the region.
He encouraged the people of Acholi to diversify their agricultural activities by embracing commercial farming of crops such as coffee and cocoa, as well as perennial crops like sim sim (sesame), sorghum, groundnuts, and various fruits.
This, he said, would not only boost income but also help protect and preserve their land.
Furthermore, the minister called on residents to invest in their land using the four-hectare model, promoted through government initiatives such as Emyooga, the Parish Development Model (PDM), and NUWEB.
He discouraged the practice of selling land at low prices, urging instead for its productive use to ensure sustainable economic development.
