The Anti-Corruption Court has sentenced Ramadhan Ngobi, 58, the Head Teacher of Nakazigo Primary School in Mayuge District, to 18 months in Luzira Prison for embezzlement and abuse of office.
In addition, he has been barred from holding any public office for a period of 10 years.
The judgment was delivered on Friday by His Worship Christopher Opit, who convicted Ngobi on both counts following a successful prosecution by the Inspectorate of Government (IG).
According to the prosecution, Ngobi unlawfully withdrew Shs176 million from the school’s bank account. The funds were intended for the construction of two classroom blocks and a five-stance latrine at Nakazigo Primary School. Instead, he used the money for personal gain, resulting in a financial loss to the school.
Ngobi received a sentence of 12 months in prison for embezzlement and 6 months for abuse of office. The sentences will run concurrently, meaning he will serve a total of 12 months.
In addition to the prison sentence and disqualification from public service, Ngobi has been ordered to refund the embezzled Shs176 million. The money is to be deposited into the IGG’s Asset Recovery Account at the Bank of Uganda.
Inspector General of Government Beti Kamya Turwomwe urged all public officials to uphold ethical standards and integrity in the execution of their duties.
