President Yoweri Museveni has issued a directive for Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations to be permanently included in the national budget.

Speaking at this year’s celebrations held at the Anglican Martyrs Site in Namugongo, President Museveni emphasized the importance of allocating funds annually to support the event, which attracts thousands of pilgrims from across the country.

“I have directed the government to make this contribution part of the national budget annually since many Ugandans participate,” the President announced.

For this year, the government contributed Shs 2 billion each to the Catholic and Anglican dioceses, and Shs 200 million to the Muslim community to aid in preparations for the celebrations.

President Museveni expressed his happiness at the large turnout, noting the devotion of the pilgrims who trekked long distances and camped overnight to honor the memory of the martyrs.

He also highlighted the government’s ongoing investment in modernizing infrastructure at both the Catholic and Protestant shrines in Namugongo, enhancing facilities to accommodate the increasing number of pilgrims.

Acknowledging the contributions of all faith communities, President Museveni assured continued support, including for the Muslim community.

“When the Muslims are ready, we shall also support them, because I am told that some Muslim followers were also killed by Mwanga,” he said.

During the same celebration, Archbishop Emeritus of the Church of Uganda, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Luke Orombi, delivered a powerful sermon urging leaders to emulate the humility and selflessness of the Uganda Martyrs.

Reflecting on their unwavering faith and sacrifice, Archbishop Orombi called on leaders to prioritize the needs of the poor and marginalized.

“As we commemorate the lives of the martyrs, let us be reminded of their dedication to service and compassion. Leaders must not only serve the affluent but also reach out to the lowly and oppressed,” he stated.
