President Yoweri Museveni is set to officially commission the construction and tarmacking of critical tourism access roads in Uganda’s scenic Kigezi sub-region, a long-anticipated development expected to significantly boost the local tourism economy.
Among the flagship projects are the 8.4-kilometer Kabale–Lake Bunyonyi road, which connects Kabale town to the picturesque Lake Bunyonyi, and the Kisoro–Nyarusiza–Muhabura road, a vital route leading to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
These roads are essential gateways to some of Uganda’s most popular tourist attractions.
For years, stakeholders in the tourism industry have expressed frustration over the government’s delayed efforts to upgrade crucial road infrastructure.
Many argue that poor road conditions have hindered tourism growth, with travelers often opting for Rwanda’s more developed road networks rather than navigating Uganda’s pothole-filled or muddy routes.
In a letter dated June 2, 2025, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works and Transport, Waiswa Bageya, confirmed that President Museveni will preside over the groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for June 13, 2025.

Bageya described the project as a transformative infrastructure investment aimed at enhancing regional connectivity, increasing visitor numbers, and driving local economic development.
He further noted that the upgraded roads will benefit surrounding communities by improving access to markets, healthcare, and education.
