Police in Kisoro District have arrested two prime suspects believed to be behind a series of armed robberies that have recently terrorized the area.
The suspects, identified as Irankunda Gerard alias Ndereya and Habyarimana Vallence, were apprehended on Friday in a joint intelligence-led operation. Irankunda was arrested in Karumena village, while Habyarimana was nabbed in Kisoro Hill village.
During a search following their arrest, security operatives recovered an AK-47 rifle with one magazine, a live round of ammunition, a pair of police khaki trousers, and a pair of suspected police-issue jungle boots, among other items.
According to police, the duo confessed to participating in at least four armed robberies in Kisoro District, specifically in Mugombero Town Center, Natete, and Mutorole, incidents for which reports had already been filed and preliminary arrests made.
Police further revealed that Irankunda had previously escaped custody from Ruti Police Station in Mbarara, where he was being interrogated by the Flying Squad Unit after being apprehended in Kisoro.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, confirmed the arrests and noted that operations are still ongoing. He said the breakthrough will enable law enforcement to intensify efforts in tracing other suspects still at large and recovering additional exhibits to support prosecution in court.
