The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abas Byakagaba, has pledged to bolster security in Rukungiri District ahead of the upcoming elections, following rising concerns over voter intimidation and political tensions.
This assurance was disclosed on Friday evening by the Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Steven Nsubuga Bewayo, shortly after a closed-door security meeting held at the Rukungiri District Council Hall. The meeting was attended by IGP Byakagaba, National Resistance Movement (NRM) parliamentary aspirants, and members of the District Security Committee.
RDC Nsubuga addressed growing public concern over alleged tensions between Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi Katugugu, the Minister for Security, and retired Gen. Henry Tumukunde.
He clarified that although both senior figures are politically active in Rukungiri, they are contesting in separate constituencies and that the district remains calm and secure.
“The district is not on fire as alleged. Security is intact, and preparations are underway to ensure a peaceful election process,” Nsubuga affirmed.
