The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission has confirmed that party primary elections for Members of Parliament will be held as scheduled on Thursday, July 17, across all 72,000 villages.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, the Commission Chairperson, Dr. Tanga Odoi, dismissed media reports suggesting a postponement.
“There were rumours that elections had been pushed, but we are going ahead as planned. All candidates should prepare according to the guidelines issued,” Dr. Tanga stated.
According to the commission, voting will be by lining up behind a candidate’s poster or agent. Members will convene at polling venues by 10:00 AM for roll call, and voting will take place from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM.
NRM Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, emphasized that only individuals listed in the official village register will be permitted to vote.
“Don’t claim there is no register. All villages will have theirs by Thursday morning. If your name is not in the register, you will not participate,” Todwong said.
He noted that the registers are currently being distributed to districts, sub-counties, and villages across the country.
Todwong also warned candidates against divisive politics:
“We’ve received reports of candidates using tribalism, religion, and money to influence voters. This must stop. Our members must remain civil and respectful.”
After vote counting, the village presiding officer will publicly announce the results and issue a declaration of results form, to be signed by all candidates’ agents.
The press briefing was attended by senior NRM party officials.
