Kisoro District has received more than 70,000 tree seedlings from the World Food Programme (WFP) as part of efforts to mitigate environmental disasters that frequently affect the area.
The seedlings, including avocado, caliandra, bamboo, and grevillea varieties, were handed over at the Kisoro District Headquarters in Kisoro Municipality.
Speaking at the handover on Monday, Kisoro District Environment Officer, Unice Akankwasa, praised WFP for its continuous support in environmental conservation. She said the trees would initially be distributed to Murora, Nyarusiza, and Muramba sub counties, which are most affected by soil erosion, floods, and drought.
Akankwasa assured residents that other sub counties would benefit in subsequent phases.

He called on residents in the targeted sub counties to plant and care for the seedlings during the current rainy season, emphasizing that proper maintenance will significantly reduce the risk of disasters.
