KASESE: Police in the Rwenzori East Region, Kasese District, are holding two drivers on charges of reckless driving and overloading.
The suspects were arrested on Sunday and are currently detained at Kasese Central Police Station. SP Nelson Tumushime, the Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed the arrests.
The first suspect, identified as Abdul Kule, was arrested for allegedly overloading a Toyota Wish with nine passengers. The vehicle, bearing registration number UBJ 244S, was en route to Bwera.
The second suspect, Asley Ajuna, was detained after a collision with a boda-boda rider near Kasese Cobalt Company Limited on the Kasese–Kikorongo Highway.
According to Tumushime, Ajuna was driving a Toyota Premio with registration number UBF 093W when he struck Albert Mbusa Syamukehere, 24, who was riding a motorcycle with registration number UGC 086N.
Syamukehere was rushed to Mt. St. Mary’s Hospital in Kasese town, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Ajuna, a resident of Bushenyi–Ishaka Municipality in Bushenyi District, now faces charges of reckless driving.
SP Tumushime expressed concern about the rising number of road accidents in the region, attributing it to a lack of driver awareness regarding the features on newly constructed roads in Kasese town.
To address this, police plan to hold sensitization meetings with road users to educate them on safe road usage.
Aganatia Bwambale Lhuhalha, Vice Chairperson of Kirembe Cell urged the police to increase traffic control efforts to reduce road accidents.
