The Electoral Commission (EC) has cautioned aspiring candidates and voters against misusing party flags, stressing that one only becomes a legitimate candidate after successful nomination.

Addressing the media at Kabale District Rukiiko Hall at the commencement of the nomination exercise for Municipal Mayors, directly elected councilors, and Special Interest Groups at the municipal level on Monday, EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi clarified that the real contest for leadership begins after nominations, not before.

He revealed that several candidates were disqualified last week after being nominated by voters using fake National Identification Numbers (NINs). Mucunguzi further noted that some voters attempted to nominate multiple candidates for the same position, which is illegal.

“The nomination process is clear. Aspirants and their nominators must provide genuine details. We urge candidates to verify their information, as well as that of their nominators, through the EC portal to avoid disruptions and delays,” Mucunguzi said.

Mucunguzi also warned aspirants against engaging in early campaigns, saying official campaigns will only begin after the harmonization process with the Commission. He added that any candidate found campaigning before the set period will face legal consequences.

In addition, he announced a ban on fundraising activities during the election period, stressing that no candidate is allowed to organize events soliciting money from potential voters. He described such acts as tantamount to bribery under Section 147(1) of the Local Government Act.

He also commended the media for its efforts in informing and educating the public on the nomination process, saying this has enhanced voter awareness and responsibility ahead of the elections.
