The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, has expressed great joy and honour in welcoming his brother, the Most Rev. Justin Badi Arama, Archbishop of South Sudan and Chairman of the Global South Fellowship of Anglican Churches (GSFA), together with Bishop Prof. Alfred Olwa of Lango Diocese, Chair of the GSFA Formation Track, and fellow bishops and their spouses from across the Global South, for the ongoing Bishops’ Formation Retreat at Lweza Training and Conference Centre.

Archbishop Kaziimba described the retreat as a testament to Uganda’s growing role as a strategic host within the global Anglican family, a peaceful, Spirit-filled space where leaders gather to pray, reflect, and be renewed in guarding the Gospel and leading God’s mission faithfully.

Throughout the week, the Archbishop has been teaching on key aspects of Christian leadership, including Jesus as the model of leadership, servant leadership, team building and strategic planning, effective delegation, challenges of episcopal leadership, and the importance of prayer life and spiritual discipline.

“True Christian leadership is not about power or privilege, but about service, humility, and faithfulness to Christ’s mission,” Archbishop Kaziimba said, referencing Matthew 20:25–28. “Greatness in God’s Kingdom is measured by our willingness to serve others.”

He emphasized the importance of family, marriage, and prayer life, noting that a bishop’s first ministry begins at home. “A strong marriage and a praying family are the foundation of an effective episcopal ministry. Without prayer, whatever we do will either backfire, misfire, or make no fire,” he stated.

The retreat also provided a platform for open discussions on the challenges of episcopal ministry, including loneliness, high expectations, limited resources, and the struggle for work-life balance. The Archbishop encouraged bishops to draw courage from Scripture, reminding them that through prayer, teamwork, and accountability, they can finish the race well.

The sessions further explored team building and strategic planning through the C.A.R.E. model: Creator, Advancer, Refiner, Executor, promoting collaborative and Spirit-led leadership. “No single leader can do it all,” Archbishop Kaziimba noted. “Delegation and trust are essential.”

Reaffirming the Church of Uganda’s commitment, the Archbishop said, “We remain steadfast in upholding Biblical authority, moral integrity, and Anglican orthodoxy. We affirm that marriage is between one man and one woman, and that holiness is our lifelong call.”

He thanked Archbishop Justin Badi Arama for his humble and visionary leadership, Bishop Alfred Olwa for coordinating the impactful formation, Bishop Danald Jute for leading powerful daily Bible studies from 2 Timothy 1:13–14, and Rev. Prof. Dr. Samuel Luboga for his enriching teaching on the physical health and well-being of church leaders.

“As the retreat continues,” Archbishop Kaziimba concluded, “my prayer is that each bishop and spouse leaves spiritually renewed, strengthened in faith, and equipped to lead with humility, wisdom, and courage. Uganda and the Global South are rising together in missio, built together for God’s glory.”
