An 81-year-old NRM Chairman for Older Persons in Nyabushabi Parish, Kyanamira Sub-county, Ndorwa East Constituency, Kabale District, Charles Katamujuna, has criticized the manner in which High Court Judge Justice Emmanuel Baguma is handling the trial of opposition figure Rtd. Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-accused, Obeid Lutale and Captain Denis Oola.

Katamujuna, a former Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) youth winger in the 1960s and 1970s, made the remarks on Wednesday during the official launch of campaign rallies for Ndorwa East Member of Parliament and Shadow Attorney General, Hon. Wilfred Niwagaba at Bugomora Primary School in Kyanamira Sub-county.

Katamujuna asked Honorable Niwagaba, as both a legislator and senior lawyer, to use his influence in Parliament to address what he described as injustices faced by Dr. Besigye and his co-accused. His comments drew strong reactions from the crowd attending the rally.

Earlier this week, during a campaign rally at Kabale Main Stadium, National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, pledged to release all political prisoners and promote justice and accountability if elected president.

He accused the government of persecuting opposition leaders and using state institutions to suppress dissent.

Dr. Besigye has been in custody since November 2024 following his arrest in Nairobi, Kenya, where he was reportedly scheduled to meet Ugandan exiles and activists.

He was later presented before a military court before being transferred to a civilian court in Uganda.

In February 2025, he was charged with treason, accused of plotting to overthrow the government between 2023 and November 2024 in various international locations, including Geneva, Athens, Nairobi, and Kampala. The case, being a capital offence, was forwarded to the High Court.

His repeated bail applications have been denied due to the gravity and cross-border nature of the allegations.

Dr. Besigye, a former personal physician and close ally of President Yoweri Museveni, has been arrested multiple times since the late 1990s after breaking ranks with the ruling establishment.

He remains one of the most prominent figures in Uganda’s opposition politics.
