The Government has officially launched the construction of an Shs 8 billion modern steel composite bridge at Ncwera, which will connect Ruhinda North and Ruhinda Central in Mitooma District.

The project, to be undertaken by M/s Armpass Technical Services Limited, aims to restore safe, reliable access to social services and ease daily movement for communities in and around Mitooma. The construction works are expected to last 18 months.

Presiding over the commissioning ceremony on Friday, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa, said the bridge will be a standard, modern structure with a lifespan of more than 100 years.

“Securing funding for the bridge was a real struggle. It took President Museveni’s personal intervention for the bridge to be allocated the Shs 8 billion necessary for its construction,” Tayebwa said.

He commended the Ministry of Works and Transport team for visiting the area to assess the old makeshift wooden bridge and appreciating the difficulties residents have faced moving between the two constituencies.

“I also wish to thank district leaders and fellow parliamentarians who supported and lobbied for this project,” he added.

Tayebwa advised the contractor to prioritize hiring local people, including cooks, foremen, and other casual workers, so that the community directly benefits from the project.

He also urged residents to protect the site by ensuring that construction materials are not stolen and sold back to them.

“If that happens, it is the standard of their own bridge that will be compromised,” he warned.
