The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has launched a six-day free medical and surgical camp at Chahafi Health Centre IV in Chahafi Town Council, Kisoro District, offering essential health services to hundreds of residents as part of the Tarehe Sita celebrations in the Kigezi Sub-region.
The camp, which began on Wednesday, aims to improve access to basic healthcare and enable residents to receive timely treatment for various illnesses. According to Col. Dr. Norbert Kabugo, who is heading the UPDF medical team, the response from the community has been overwhelming.
Dr. Kabugo noted that the team is providing a range of services, including malaria testing and treatment, dental care, midwifery, minor and major surgeries, and general health education. He revealed that the majority of cases recorded so far are malaria-related.

Chahafi Health Centre IV in-charge, Dr. John Bosco Nkurunziza, commended the UPDF medical team for offering vital services to the community, describing their efforts as a true demonstration of patriotism.
He encouraged residents to make full use of the camp, noting that UPDF health workers are equally qualified and competent.
Dr. Nkurunziza attributed the high prevalence of malaria in the area to Kisoro’s swampy and water-logged terrain, which creates ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Residents who benefited from the ongoing services praised the UPDF for bringing healthcare closer to the people. They said the camp has helped many who would otherwise struggle to access treatment and thanked the NRM government for nurturing a disciplined and development-oriented army that continues to strengthen civil–military cooperation.
