KISORO: The Manager of National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) in Kisoro District Engineer Charles Ateker Odeke has condemned the improper disposal of waste into the sewage network, which is disrupting the flow of sewage and causing leaks throughout the town.

This statement follows a recent breakdown of the sewer line earlier this week at the former Drive-In Hotel along Mutolere Road in Kisoro Municipality.

Engineer Odeke explained that during the NWSC team’s intervention to clear the blockage, they discovered that a section of residents had been disposing of stones, clothes, towels, sanitary pads, and other waste materials into the sewer system.

Odeke emphasized that such practices have led to blockages, particularly during the rainy season, when the overflow of mixed wastes such as baby diapers, pads, and metal objects converges to cause clogs in the system.

“Sewer line blockages are a recurring problem in Kisoro, primarily due to the disposal of grease and debris down the drains,” Odeke said. “When grease, oils, and fats cool, they stick to the inner lining of sewage pipes, forming clogs that hinder the flow of water. This issue is compounded by food particles and other debris.”

He also warned the public against misusing their toilets by flushing stones, clothing, and diapers. He pointed out that many people no longer use toilet paper, which further contributes to problems with sewage flow.

“It’s quite absurd that some people still use stones or hard paper instead of toilet paper. This has a negative impact on our sewer line networks. Sewage typically flows at a speed of 0.6 to 0.7 meters per second, depending on the type of sewer and its conditions. However, when metals and diapers are flushed, they increase the pressure and temperature inside the pipes, which can make them brittle and more likely to break under pressure,” Odeke said.

He also cautioned residents against connecting water drainage from their compounds to manholes, as this disrupts the intended purpose of the sewage system.
