BUDUDA: The Government of Uganda has allocated UGX 50 billion to resettle over 5,000 households at risk in the Elgon Sub-region.
This development was disclosed by the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, who emphasized the government’s concern about the ongoing loss of lives caused by natural disasters in the region.
“Under the wise leadership of His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, we are committed to ensuring the safety of our people. This must stop,” Nabbanja said, referring to the tragic deaths resulting from disasters such as landslides.
On Thursday, Nabbanja, accompanied by the area Member of Parliament, Resident District Commissioners, local leaders, and opinion leaders, visited Bududa District, one of the areas most prone to landslides.
During the visit, the delegation inspected a dangerous crack stretching over 70 kilometers, extending to Kapchorwa District.
“Despite the visible risk, some people still insist on staying in these areas. We must relocate them and others living in similarly high-risk zones immediately,” she stressed.
The Prime Minister revealed that the current phase of relocation involves a new cash transfer policy designed to empower affected families.
“Under this initiative, each household will receive UGX 17 million—UGX 10 million from the government and UGX 7 million from the development partner, GiveDirectly—along with two acres of land in Bunambutye”. She said.
“This policy allows families to construct their own homes, a shift from the previous model where the government provided fully built houses,” Nabbanja explained.
The government’s commitment to addressing disaster risks in the Elgon Sub-region reflects its determination to safeguard lives and empower communities to rebuild in safer areas.
