A six-year-old child died on the spot and dozens of passengers were injured in a bus accident along the Mbarara–Kabale highway in Ntungamo District on Friday night.
The crash occurred at about 9:00 p.m. at Rwentobo when a Bismarkan-bound bus, registration number UBG 789J, traveling from Kampala to Kisoro District, reportedly lost control, veered off the road and overturned.
A junior traffic officer at the scene, who requested anonymity because he is not an official police spokesperson, said many passengers sustained injuries. The victims were rushed to Itojo Hospital and several private health facilities in the area for treatment.
Although police had not yet established the exact number of casualties by the time of filing this report, the officer said the figure is likely to be high as the bus was full.
Our reporter observed police officers and local residents struggling to retrieve the body of the deceased child, which remained trapped beneath the overturned bus at the time of filing.
