Residents living along the Rwanda border in Kafunjo Parish, Buhara Sub- County, Kabale District, have appealed to the Ndorwa East Member of Parliament, Hon. Wilfred Niwagaba, to lobby government for funds to construct a telecommunication mast to address persistent network challenges in the area.

Speaking during his campaign rallies at Ruboroga, Nyabicwamba and Nyarutojo polling stations in Kafunjo Parish on Friday, residents expressed concern that for decades their mobile phones have been roaming onto Rwanda’s telecom networks. They said the problem has made it difficult to make local calls, disrupting communication, business activities and access to essential services.

In response, Niwagaba, who is seeking re-election in the 2026 polls, assured residents that he has already raised the matter with the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC). He revealed that the regulator has issued a three-year ultimatum to telecommunication companies to resolve the cross-border network interference.

The legislator also reiterated that one of the components of the Shs 48 billion Bugarama–Karweru Water Project, launched in November, is the installation of a three-phase electricity line to power water pumps drawing from key sources, he says will provide a reliable power supply to residents in the area, helping to boost business activities and improve livelihoods.
