The Rukiga District LC5 independent candidate, Micheal Kwarikunda Mbareba, has criticized recent campaign statements by his rival on employment and regulation of bars, describing them as unrealistic and potentially harmful to the district’s local economy.

The remarks follow comments made by the Rukiga District LC5 National Resistance Movement (NRM) party flag bearer, Simon Mutebi Rwamagyenda, during a campaign rally held on Monday at Kyerero Parish in Bukinda Sub- County who stated that if elected in the 2026 general elections, bars in Rukiga District would be required to remain closed during morning hours and only open from 2:00 p.m., a move he said would discourage early-morning alcohol consumption and promote productivity among residents.

Rwamagyenda also argued that government jobs in Rukiga District should be reserved exclusively for residents of the district, advising applicants from neighbouring areas such as Rukungiri District and the wider Ankole sub-region to seek employment opportunities in their respective home districts.

However, while addressing journalists in Kabale town on Sunday, Kwarikunda strongly opposed the sentiments, stressing that leadership should be inclusive and focused on serving all residents rather than promoting restrictive policies.

He reminded voters that being an independent candidate does not limit one’s ability to lead effectively, citing examples of independent leaders who have successfully served in government. He urged the people of Rukiga to make informed choices and take an active role in shaping the future of their district.

Kwarikunda further called on residents to participate fully in the upcoming local government elections, emphasizing the importance of turning up at polling stations to cast their votes. He raised concerns over the creation of new polling stations, noting that the Electoral Commission recently increased the number in the district from 115 to 167.

“Many people are still not aware of where the new polling stations are located,” Kwarikunda said, urging voters to familiarize themselves with the changes to avoid being disenfranchised.

According to Kwarikunda, his campaign is centered on addressing community concerns rather than party politics or political flamboyance. He says his manifesto prioritizes proper representation, accountability, and improved social services, which he believes set his campaign apart from opponents who focus largely on party affiliation.
