Concerns over unfulfilled presidential pledges, poverty alleviation, and political accountability dominated a tense gathering in Kisoro District after the Presidential Advisor on Agriculture, Peace Rugambwa, failed to address more than 350 supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP).
The meeting, held at the Kisoro Municipal Council Main Hall on Sunday, exposed growing frustration among residents who questioned why Kisoro continues to lag behind in development despite repeated promises from the central government.
Voters demanded explanations over stalled infrastructure, limited employment opportunities, and unmet commitments made by President Yoweri Museveni over the years.
Among the issues raised was the case of Kisoro-based musician Swigga Man, who reportedly campaigned for President Museveni during the 2016 elections and was promised a vehicle in return.
Residents cited the undelivered pledge as a symbol of broader government commitments that remain unfulfilled.
Teachers and other community members also outlined grievances affecting service delivery, explaining why many residents continue to support the opposition.
The incident followed allegations that Rugambwa’s visit was linked to claims of political defections and the distribution of money.
Some residents said they attended the meeting expecting clarity on these claims, but instead left without direct engagement, further deepening mistrust between leaders and the electorate.
In her response, Rugambwa attributed the failure to implement presidential pledges to weaknesses in local leadership, arguing that district leaders have not adequately followed up on government commitments.
She cautioned elected officials against remaining office-bound, urging them to prioritize community engagement and service delivery.
