Dr. Crispus Kiyonga has been appointed the new Chancellor of Makerere University, with a commitment to elevate the institution to a world-class level. His appointment was announced on August 31, 2024, by the university’s governing council at the main campus, following his selection by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
A seasoned politician and former Minister of Defense, Dr. Kiyonga brings extensive leadership and public service experience to the role. He succeeds Professor Ezra Suruma, who served as Chancellor for two terms since 2016.
“I am deeply honored and humbled by this appointment,” Dr. Kiyonga stated during his acceptance speech at Kibirigha Church of Uganda in Bwera sub-county, Kasese District where he was attending a church construction fundraising event. “I pledge to work tirelessly to promote academic excellence, innovation, and community engagement at Makerere University.”

“Our students are the future leaders of this country, and we must ensure they receive a well-rounded education that prepares them for the challenges ahead. I will work to improve student facilities, expand scholarship opportunities, and promote student entrepreneurship and innovation,” he said.
