Police in Rukungiri District have taken decisive action to uphold the rule of law and protect peaceful political activities following the defacement of campaign posters in Nyakagyeme Sub-county.

A 42-year-old local leader, identified as Darius Nabasa, the area chairperson of Omukibungo Village, is currently in police custody in connection with the incident.

Police are also actively pursuing two other suspects believed to have been involved. The incident reportedly occurred on January 7, 2026, at Half London Trading Centre in Omukibungo Village.

According to police findings, the matter arose after Hon. Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi Katugugu, the NRM flag bearer for Rujumbura Constituency, held a campaign rally at the trading centre earlier that evening. Campaign posters displayed around the venue were later allegedly vandalized.
