The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has announced the full restoration of public internet access across the country, following the successful conclusion of the 2026 General Elections.

In a press briefing on Sunday, UCC Executive Director Hon. Nyombi Thembo confirmed that the internet was restored effective 18th January 2026, following a careful assessment by the Inter-Agency Security Committee.

“The phased and responsible return to connectivity reflects the Commission’s commitment to balancing national security with citizens’ legitimate needs for information, communication, and economic activity,” said Hon. Thembo.

He explained that the temporary suspension of public internet was a precautionary measure recommended by the security committee to safeguard public order, prevent the rapid spread of misinformation, curb potential electoral fraud, and protect against incitement to violence during a highly sensitive national period.

“This measure was not taken lightly. It was implemented to ensure that the electoral process proceeded peacefully and that the peace and stability Ugandans have worked so hard to maintain were not undermined,” Hon. Thembo added.

As of midnight today, general public internet access has been fully restored, allowing Ugandans to browse websites, access news, educational resources, government portals, financial services, and email. However, social media platforms and messaging applications remain temporarily restricted to prevent misuse that could threaten public order.

Hon. Thembo urged Ugandans to use the restored internet responsibly. “The internet is a powerful tool for development, education, business, and staying connected with loved ones. Avoid sharing unverified information, hate speech, or content that could incite violence. Responsible digital citizenship is key to national unity,” he said.

He commended citizens for the largely peaceful conduct of the elections, highlighting it as a demonstration of the maturity of Ugandans and the strength of the country’s institutions.

“Any attempt to use the restored internet to organise disorder, spread falsehoods, or undermine national stability will not be tolerated,” he warned.

The UCC pledged to continue monitoring the situation and working closely with security agencies to ensure that digital spaces are safe. Hon. Thembo thanked mobile network operators, security agencies, and the public for their cooperation and patience during the temporary suspension.

“The restoration of public internet marks an important step forward as we move beyond the election period. Let us embrace this connectivity with maturity and responsibility to continue building the Uganda we all deserve,” he concluded.
