A 70-year-old man has been found brutally murdered at Nyakagezi Trading Centre in Kisoro District, sparking concern among residents over rising insecurity in the area.

The deceased has been identified as Benon Nsekerabanzi, a resident of Bukerahe Village in Karago Parish, Murora Sub- County, Bufumbira East Constituency. His body was discovered on Monday morning lying in a pool of blood, with visible injuries including cuts to the head and face. Bloodstains were also found scattered across parts of the trading centre.

At the scene, investigators recovered suspected murder weapons, including a blood-stained iron bar and a stick. Other items found included removed teeth believed to belong to the deceased, as well as buttons from the coat he was wearing.

According to his son, Samvura Obed, the family received the shocking news in the morning. He revealed that he had last seen his father at home before learning that he had later gone to take a drink at Nyakagezi Trading Centre, where he is believed to have been attacked and killed.

Local resident Safari Nikodemu expressed concern over increasing cases of crime in the area, attributing it to idle youth engaging in drug abuse, including marijuana and cigarettes, which he said may be contributing to criminal behavior. The Local Council I Chairperson, Eriya Habumugisha, says that the area has been experiencing insecurity challenges, with suspected criminals allegedly crossing from the neighboring country of Rwanda.

By Press time, Police in Kisoro had visited the scene, documented evidence, and transferred the body to Kisoro Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination.

This incident marks the second murder reported in Kisoro District within a week. Recently, Samvura Richard, a taxi driver from Sagitwe Village in Mabungo Parish, Nyarusiza Sub- County, was found murdered, with his body dumped in stagnant water at Nturo Trading Centre.

Ten suspects were arrested in connection with that case, and the deceased was laid to rest on Easter Sunday.
