Some street vendors in Kabale Municipality have defied the enforcement of the trade order that officially took effect on Wednesday, returning to the streets just hours after being removed by authorities.

On Tuesday, the Kabale Municipality Deputy Town Clerk, Sunday Eric, announced the start of the operation, which initially targets small-scale businesses, particularly vendors dealing in merchandise, clothing, and food along the streets.

He explained that larger businesses, including timber dealers, have been given a two-week grace period, with full enforcement for that category set to begin on May 4.

On Wednesday morning, municipal authorities moved to clear vendors operating mobile stalls, selling food and clothes, and those occupying illegal structures. However, by Wednesday evening, many of the evicted vendors had returned to their former spots, a development Sunday described as disappointing.

A visit by our reporter to the abattoir area, where several structures had been marked with an “X” by the municipal council, found no demolitions had taken place by the time of filing this report, with business continuing as usual.

Sunday said the grace period is intended to allow business owners adequate time to relocate peacefully before forceful enforcement begins. He warned that starting May 4, authorities will implement the directive fully and without leniency against those who fail to comply.

A spot check by our reporter in areas including Kikoregi, Mwanjari, Kigongi, Bugongi, and Kabale Main Street found some vendors already demolishing structures that had been condemned by municipal authorities.

Several vendors, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they chose to vacate early to avoid losses, citing past enforcement operations in other districts where merchandise was destroyed.
