Authorities in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo have confirmed a case of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Goma, triggering an emergency response aimed at preventing the spread of the deadly virus.

In an official statement, AFC-M23 authorities confirmed that the patient has been isolated and is receiving treatment under strict medical supervision as health teams intensify efforts to contain the disease.

According to the statement, AFC-M23 leadership immediately coordinated with health partners and local authorities to activate emergency containment measures following confirmation of the case.

AFC-M23 spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka said comprehensive contact tracing has already begun to identify, monitor and support individuals who may have come into contact with the infected person. Surveillance teams have also been deployed in affected areas to strengthen monitoring and reinforce preventive measures.

The Governor of North Kivu, Bahati Musanga Erasto, reminded the public that Ebola spreads through direct contact with blood, bodily fluids, contaminated objects, or infected persons showing symptoms, and is not transmitted through the air.

Health officials listed common symptoms of Ebola as sudden fever, severe headaches, muscle pain, fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea, unexplained weakness and bleeding.
