The Kaharo Sub-county Councillor, Flavia Nyinakiiza Kanagizi, has been re-elected as the Speaker of Kabale District Council following a hotly contested election held at the District Rukiiko Hall at the district headquarters.
Nyinakiiza, who contested as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer, defeated Kahungye Sub-county District Councillor Baker Turyamureba, who stood as an independent candidate.
In the election, Nyinakiiza secured 21 votes against Turyamureba’s 14 votes. The exercise was presided over by the Kabale Chief Magistrate, His Worship Derrick Byamugisha, who officially declared Nyinakiiza the winner.
Following her victory, Nyinakiiza took the Oath of Allegiance and Oath of Office before the council. The Kabale Chief Administrative Officer, Robert Mugabe, handed over the instruments of office, including the stamp, mace, standard rules of procedure for local governments, bell, Local Government Act, Constitution, gown, and keys.
In her remarks, Nyinakiiza commended the councillors for entrusting her with another term as District Speaker.
Shortly after assuming office, Nyinakiiza presided over the election of the Deputy Speaker. The race featured National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer Tom Kazemera, the District Councillor representing Northern Division, and independent candidate Hillary Ahimbisibwe, the District Councillor representing Southern Division.
Kazemera won the election with 19 votes, defeating Ahimbisibwe, who garnered 16 votes, and was subsequently declared the newly elected Deputy Speaker.
Kazemera succeeds Ronald Mugisha Ian, who opted to contest for the Kabale Municipality mayoral seat but lost to the incumbent mayor, Emmanuel Byamugisha Sentaro, in the recently concluded general elections.
