The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abbas Byakagaba, has transferred the Greater Bushenyi Regional Police Spokesperson and Community Liaison Officer, SP Apollo Tayebwa, to Makerere University, where he will serve as the Political Commissar.
SP Tayebwa had been serving as the acting Regional Police Spokesperson since May 2025 following the retirement of veteran police officer SSP Marcial Tumusiime. News of his transfer emerged on Thursday night, with Tayebwa confirming the development.
He has been replaced by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Godfrey Asiimwe Muteera, who previously served as the Divisional Community Liaison Officer for Kawempe Police Division in Kampala. ASP Muteera is widely known for his public advocacy, crime prevention campaigns, and community policing initiatives.
Before his deployment to Kawempe, ASP Muteera served as the District Police Commander in Kyotera and as the District Community Liaison Officer in Masaka. He was among the officers deployed by the Inspector General of Police in 2018 as part of a broader strategy to strengthen community policing through the placement of senior officers at major police stations across the country.
In a farewell message shared on his X account, SP Tayebwa expressed gratitude to stakeholders in the Greater Bushenyi region for the support and cooperation extended to him during his tenure.
“As I take leave of the Greater Bushenyi Police Region following my transfer, I wish to sincerely thank all stakeholders for the support, cooperation and trust accorded to me during my tour of duty,” he said.
Tayebwa described his service in the region as both an honour and a privilege, noting that strong partnerships had helped enhance peace, security and development in the area.
“Together, we strengthened partnerships and promoted community policing, which enhanced peace, security and development across our communities,” he added.
He further thanked political leaders, local governments, security agencies, religious and cultural institutions, the media, civil society organisations and members of the public for their unwavering collaboration with the Uganda Police Force.
“As I move on to my next assignment, I carry with me fond memories, valuable experiences and lasting friendships,” Tayebwa remarked.
He called upon all stakeholders to continue supporting efforts aimed at maintaining a safe, peaceful and prosperous Greater Bushenyi region.
