Parental Care Nursery and Primary School, Bushenyi, emerged champions of the inaugural Uganda National Schools Scrabble Championship after defeating eight other schools in a competition aimed at promoting literacy, confidence and critical thinking among learners.
The championship, organised by the Scrabble Association of Uganda under the theme “Bringing Scrabble to Schools,” was held at Gayaza Junior School. The tournament attracted both primary and secondary schools from across the country.
The competition sought to boost learners’ vocabulary, grammar, confidence and self-belief through the strategic word game, which is played by forming interconnected words horizontally and vertically on a game board.
Schools that competed in the primary category included Gayaza Junior School, Parental Care Nursery and Primary School Bushenyi, Good Times School Kawala, St. Catherine Junior School and Janan Nursery School.
The secondary category featured Janan Secondary School, Seeta High School Mukono, Gayaza High School and Wampewo Secondary School.
Future Stars Executive Director, Dorian Nduhuura, said the tournament was part of efforts to give every child an opportunity to discover and nurture their talents.
He revealed that the top two performers will represent Uganda at an international Scrabble championship scheduled for August in Nairobi, Kenya.
The tournament’s Most Valuable Players (MVPs) were Tricia Atuhaire and Ethan Matsiko of Parental Care Nursery and Primary School Bushenyi, alongside Brian Ssebuliba of Wampewo Secondary School.
Chief Guest Brian Ssenyonga, the Wakiso District Sports Officer, commended Gayaza Junior School for successfully hosting the event despite challenges posed by the Ebola outbreak.
Speaking after the victory, Parental Care Nursery and Primary School Director Trevor Ayebazamukama attributed the school’s success to God’s guidance, while applauding the commitment and hard work of the coaches and pupils.
Meanwhile, Tricia Atuhaire, one of the school’s outstanding performers, is also set to represent Uganda at the International Spelling Bee Competition scheduled for November 2026 in Harare, Zimbabwe, further cementing the school’s growing reputation for academic excellence.
