Kisoro Municipality has secured Shillings 24 billion under the Uganda Cities and Municipalities Infrastructure Development (UCMID) Programme, setting the stage for major road upgrades and urban development projects over the next four years.
The World Bank-funded programme will finance infrastructure projects between 2026 and 2030, with the funding expected to improve the municipality’s road network and transform the appearance of the tourism town.
Municipal Town Clerk Richard Mugisha said the allocation could increase to Shillings 30 billion if the municipality performs well in local revenue collection and delivers its planned development projects successfully.
Mugisha said the municipality plans to begin with the construction of the Mayor’s Garden, an Shillings 11 billion project, before undertaking the construction of a modern taxi park estimated to cost Shillings 4 billion.
However, the proposed order of implementation has drawn differing views among municipal leaders.
Municipal Council Secretary for Works Joachim Hashakimana believes the taxi park should be prioritised because it requires less funding and would provide quicker economic benefits to residents, traders and transport operators.
Hashakimana, however, acknowledged that as a tourism municipality, Kisoro also has a strong case for investing in the upgrading and beautification of the Mayor’s Garden to make the town more attractive to visitors.
The Shs24 billion funding is expected to play a significant role in modernising Kisoro Municipality’s infrastructure while strengthening its position as one of Uganda’s key tourism and commercial centres.
