Opposition politician Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi has reportedly been arrested again, less than a day after securing bail and returning home following seven months in prison.

The reported re-arrest occurred on Friday, just hours after Kivumbi addressed hundreds of supporters who had gathered at his home in Butambala District to welcome him following his release.

Speaking to the crowd, Kivumbi said his time in detention had not weakened his political resolve. He told supporters he would take two days to rest before resuming his opposition political activities.

According to National Unity Platform (NUP) Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya, security officers intercepted Kivumbi at a security roadblock in Mpigi District as he travelled from Butambala to Kampala.

Rubongoya said Kivumbi was stopped at the roadblock before being taken to an unknown location.

Kivumbi’s lawyer, Sam Muyizzi, said his client was arrested in Mpigi and bundled into what he described as a “drone”—a term commonly used in Uganda to refer to an unmarked security van.

A video published by AfroMobile appears to show traffic police officers stopping Kivumbi’s white Toyota Land Cruiser at the roadblock. As he stepped out of the vehicle, plain-clothed security operatives reportedly surrounded him and forced him into a numberless white van before driving away.

The reported arrest comes barely a day after Justice Susan Okalanyi granted bail to Kivumbi and 16 of his co-accused, ending 169 days of detention on terrorism charges linked to the violence that followed the January 2026 general elections.

Kivumbi was released on a cash bail of Shs10 million, while each of his 16 co-accused was granted cash bail of Shs1 million. By press time, it remained unclear which security agency had carried out the reported arrest, and authorities had not announced any fresh charges against him.
