The Western Region Chairperson of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), Dr. Nicholas Kamara, has expressed concern over the increasing cases of abductions and human rights violations in Uganda.
Dr. Kamara, the former Member of Parliament for Kabale Municipality, made the remarks during the wedding reception of the People’s Front for Freedom Speaker for Kigezi Province, Gideon Tumwesigye, and his wife, Eva Tumwesigye. The event was held at Brazin Forest Resort in Kabale Municipality on Saturday.
Kamara said the recent arrest of the party’s National Chairperson, Erias Lukwago, raises fears that other party leaders could also be targeted in a bid to cripple the operations of the opposition party and suppress civic space.
He urged Ugandans not to remain silent in the face of human rights abuses, emphasizing that it is the constitutional duty of every citizen to defend and protect their rights whenever they are threatened.
The Governor for PFF Kigezi Province, Fred Turyamuhweza, commended Gideon Tumwesigye for his commitment to the struggle for human rights, justice, and truth. He described him as a dedicated freedom fighter who has consistently stood up for the rights of ordinary citizens.
Col Emmy Katabazi the Senior Presidential Advisor on Security and Intelligence, condemned the growing divisions in the Kigezi Sub-region based on religion and political affiliation. He also criticized the increasing levels of corruption in government primary schools, noting that the country loses over one trillion shillings annually to corruption, a situation he said has negatively affected the quality of education.
Meanwhile, the Rubanda District Chairperson, Stephen Ampaire Kasyaba, called on residents to embrace unity, saying that division undermines development and social progress.
Kasyaba urged communities to work closely with their elected leaders to foster development, noting that the election period is over and that leaders and citizens should now focus on service delivery and improving livelihoods.
