The Chairperson of the Kisoro District United Boda Boda Operators, Robert Karangala, has asked boda boda riders to look beyond passenger transport and invest in income-generating activities to improve their livelihoods and reduce poverty.
Karangala made the call on Tuesday during a function at Nteko–Chahafi Stage in Chahafi Town Council, where members of the stage association distributed goats to fellow riders as part of a community economic empowerment initiative.
He said many boda boda operators depend solely on daily transport earnings, which are often unpredictable and insufficient to meet household needs. He encouraged riders to venture into projects such as goat rearing, piggery and poultry farming to create additional sources of income.
According to Karangala, engaging in such activities would enable riders to improve their family incomes, pay school fees for their children with ease and become financially stable.
He also challenged other boda boda stages across Kisoro District to emulate the Nteko–Chahafi initiative by embracing savings and investment schemes that promote economic transformation among members.
Wilson Mbyayingabo, one of the leaders of the stage, revealed that members had saved Shs10 million, which they used to purchase goats for distribution to 37 members. He said the project is intended to help members earn additional income while also obtaining manure for farming.
Mbyayingabo added that the stage has established a savings cooperative to strengthen members’ saving culture and improve their financial resilience.
