Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has accused former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago of stealing money allegedly meant for the construction of roads in the capital over a period of more than 20 years, warning that he will not escape justice.

In a post on X, Muhoozi made the allegations against Lukwago, suggesting that the former mayor could remain in prison for some time as the accusations against him continue to attract attention.

“Lukwago stole the money meant to construct Kampala’s roads for over 20 years. He will not escape justice,” Muhoozi posted.

The statement has raised questions about the allegations against Lukwago, a prominent opposition politician who served as Kampala Lord Mayor and has frequently criticised the government over the management of the capital, service delivery and the condition of urban infrastructure.

Kampala has struggled with deteriorating roads, drainage challenges, flooding and traffic congestion, with residents repeatedly demanding improvements to the city’s infrastructure.

Muhoozi’s remarks directly linked the longstanding road problems to alleged financial misconduct, although the post, as provided, did not identify specific transactions, contracts or investigations to support the accusation.

The warning that Lukwago would not escape justice also adds a political dimension to the matter, given the former mayor’s position as a vocal government critic.

However, the allegations contained in Muhoozi’s social media post should not be treated as established facts without supporting evidence or findings by the relevant authorities or a court of law.

It was not immediately clear from the statement whether Muhoozi was referring to a specific criminal case, an ongoing investigation or a new complaint against the former mayor.

Further clarification from the relevant investigative agencies and judicial authorities would be necessary to establish whether Lukwago faces any case connected to the alleged misuse of Kampala road construction funds.
