Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among on Tuesday attended a meeting of the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) Central Executive Committee (CEC) at State House Entebbe, marking her first major public political appearance in months.

Among’s return to a high-level party gathering comes more than five months after she withdrew from the race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament amid scrutiny over allegations of corruption and abuse of office.

Following her withdrawal, the Bukedea District Woman MP was reportedly placed under house arrest as security operatives conducted searches at properties linked to her.

At least five luxury vehicles were briefly impounded, while security personnel also searched her former chambers at Parliament.

Among had been one of the most influential figures in the ruling party. She served as Deputy Speaker before taking over as Speaker in March 2022 following the death of Jacob Oulanyah.

However, her political fortunes changed dramatically in May 2026, when joint security teams searched her residences in Nakasero and Kigo. Investigations also extended to other properties associated with her, including those in Bukedea District.

The searches were linked to allegations of corruption, illicit enrichment, money laundering and abuse of office. The allegations were under investigation, although Among had not been formally charged in connection with the probe when she announced her withdrawal from the Speakership race.

Parliament subsequently elected Oboth-Oboth to lead the 12th Parliament, while Thomas Tayebwa retained the Deputy Speaker position.Among was subsequently confined to her residence for about 100 days as security restrictions remained in place.

In August, Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba announced that President Yoweri Museveni had directed that Among be released from house arrest and would not be prosecuted over the allegations.Gen Muhoozi said the President had decided to forgive her.

The announcement marked a significant development in a controversy that had kept the former Speaker away from public political activities and raised questions about her future within the ruling party. Her attendance at Tuesday’s CEC meeting now brings her back into the company of senior NRM leaders after months of uncertainty surrounding her political standing.

The CEC is one of the NRM’s principal decision-making organs, bringing together senior party officials to discuss political strategy, organisational matters and other issues affecting the ruling party. Its meetings at State House have previously played an important role in shaping the party’s position on parliamentary leadership.

Despite the controversy, Among remains the elected Woman MP for Bukedea and the NRM’s Second National Vice Chairperson (Female). Her appearance at the meeting comes as the ruling party continues to organise its leadership following the 2026 general elections.

It remains unclear whether Tuesday’s meeting will address Among’s future role within the party or whether her attendance signals a formal change in her political standing following months of uncertainty.
