Police in Rukiga District have arrested a 30-year-old man for allegedly exhuming the remains of his late mother without authorisation.
The suspect, identified as Tweyongere Tofiri, a resident of Rutooma Cell, Nyakagabagaba Parish, Rwamucucu Sub-county, was arrested on November 7, 2026. The deceased, identified as Medius Allen Tumushabe, died in 2011 and was buried at her ancestral home in Rutooma Village, Nyakagabagaba Parish.
According to police, the suspect allegedly went to his mother’s grave at around 3pm on Saturday and exhumed her remains without a court order, lawful authority or consent from family members and local authorities.
Police said community members arrested him while he was allegedly in possession of a human skull, an incident that reportedly shocked and frightened family members and residents.
The suspect is currently detained at Rukiga District Police Central Station (CPS) as investigations continue.
He is facing charges of criminal trespass, exhuming a body and disturbing the peace of the dead, contrary to the Penal Code Act.
Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime said the suspect would be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.
