RUKUNGIRI – Unknown assailants on Thursday night attacked, injured and stole a gun from a 59-year-old security guard employed by Millennium Security Company Ltd in Rukungiri District.
The victim, Erigio Mugyenyi, was on duty at Bwangu Investment Mukwano Depot in Rukungiri municipality when the incident occurred at 1:00 am.
During the attack, Mugyenyi was struck on the head multiple times with a large stone, resulting in injuries. The assailants also stole Mugyenyi’s pump action gun, identified as UG PSO 07318-03821, along with one round of ammunition.
Following the assault, Mugyenyi lost consciousness and wandered aimlessly. His colleague, Besima Pancrasio, who was guarding nearby, noticed him staggering on the road with his shirt stained with blood. Concerned, Besima inquired about the incident, and Mugyenyi explained that he had been assaulted. When asked about the whereabouts of the gun, Mugyenyi revealed that he had left it covered with a box where he had been resting.
Besima promptly took Mugyenyi to Case Clinic for first aid. Despite his efforts, Besima could not locate the missing gun. He informed their supervisor, Eria Tumwesigye, who reported the matter to Rukungiri Central Police station for further action.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson, provided details of the investigation. The crime scene was visited and meticulously documented, with relevant statements recorded, including Mugyenyi’s account. The police recovered a big stone with blood stains, a head dress, and a black backpack as exhibits.
According to Maate, Mugyenyi’s statement suggested that during his patrol, an individual introduced themselves as a Millennium Security Company Ltd staff working in Ishaka Bushenyi. This person requested to spend the night, and when Mugyenyi took a brief rest, he was attacked. Police suspect that this individual may be involved in the assault and theft of the gun.
Maate confirmed that investigations are underway to recover the stolen gun.
