RUKIGA – Vigilance is heightened in Rukiga district to combat the spread of Anthrax and Foot and Mouth diseases as residents purchase meat to commemorate the Birth of Jesus Christ.
This precautionary measure stems from an incident in Ibanda district, where five individuals were hospitalized after consuming suspected contaminated meat infected by Anthrax.
Dr. Moses Turihohabwe, also known as Kongo, the Assistant Veterinary Officer of Rukiga District, affirmed collaboration with law enforcement to prevent the importation of animals from districts at high risk of these diseases.
Kongo and his team closely monitor all slaughtering centers, ensuring they are well-prepared and equipped with necessary tools to guarantee the safety of meat consumed by the public.
“The Veterinary Office in Rukiga District is working hand in hand with law enforcement to hinder the importation of animals from high-risk districts. My colleagues and I are meticulously overseeing the slaughtering process to ensure people consume safe and uncontaminated meat,” emphasized Dr. Moses Turihohabwe.
Elias Katoto, Chairman of the Association of Butchers in Rukiga district, shared that officials urged them to adhere strictly to guidelines in order to prevent the spread of the diseases.
Over 100 animals, including cows, goats, pigs, and sheep, were slaughtered under the guidance of Veterinary Office officials.
“We have slaughtered over 100 animals, including cows, goats, pigs, and sheep, following the stipulated guidelines set by the officials,” reported Elias Katoto.
David Tukundane, also known as Fura, from Smart Butcher Muhanga, highlighted the Christmas festivals as a lucrative period for their business.
Fura emphasized their commitment to customer safety by diligently following the guidelines to prevent the spread of Anthrax and Foot and Mouth diseases.
Anthrax, caused by Bacillus anthracis bacteria found naturally in soil, poses a significant threat to both domestic and wild animals.
Humans can contract the disease through contact with infected animals or contaminated animal products.
