KIGEZI – Police in the Kigezi Sub-region have warned to arrest individuals intending to exhibit fireworks without prior permission from the Inspector General of Police, in anticipation of the upcoming New Year celebrations.
Highlighting the festive tradition of jubilation during New Year celebrations, the police emphasized the inclusion of fireworks displays. They underscored that engaging in the illegal exhibition of fireworks would lead to legal consequences.
Elly Maate, the spokesperson for the Kigezi region police, stressed that only individuals with explicit permission from the Inspector General of Police would be allowed to display fireworks. Maate also cautioned those authorized to conduct such displays to employ qualified personnel and limit the duration of the fireworks to no more than five minutes.
Maate urged event organizers to implement crowd control measures and ensure that the firing position for the display is devoid of people. He also emphasized the necessity of having a substantial number of fire extinguishers, no fewer than 10, to address any unforeseen incidents.
He also asked Proprietors organizing the display areas to notify residents in the vicinity to heighten awareness. Maate disclosed that territorial police and allied security forces had established task teams to closely monitor compliance with the guidelines and coordinate with all relevant stakeholders involved in the activities.
