MBARARA – Dr. Anna Rose Ademun, the Commissioner of Animal Health, has swiftly imposed quarantine restrictions on the movement of cattle, pigs, sheep, and goats, along with their products, in response to the confirmed outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease in Mbarara City and the surrounding district.
Citing the Animal Act, Cap 38, Ademun has mandated an immediate quarantine for Mbarara City and the larger district, prohibiting the movement of livestock and related products until further notice.
Ademun emphasizes the closure of livestock markets, slaughterhouses, butcheries, loading grounds, and animal shows, ensuring a comprehensive approach to curb the disease’s spread.
Furthermore, she directs local government administrators, district veterinary officers, enforcement personnel, and the public to diligently enforce these quarantine restrictions in accordance with the Animal Act, Cap 38.
In response to the nationwide outbreak affecting 32 districts, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa has instructed the Agriculture Minister to provide a detailed statement next Thursday.
The statement is expected to outline the duration of the affected districts’ quarantine and elucidate the government’s actions, especially regarding the provision of necessary vaccines to farmers.
