RUKUNGIRI: Police in Rukungiri District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of a 14-year-old girl in Kebisoni town council.
The deceased, identified as Faith Owembabazi, was the daughter of Kanyankole Edson, a resident of Ndama Nkamba Cell, Northern Ward, Kebisoni Town Council in Rukungiri district.
Reports indicate that she was struck by a motor vehicle with registration number UG 1697W, a yellow truck Komatsu on Monday at approximately 2:00 PM. The vehicle was driven by Mugisha Yasin, 48 years old, and a resident of Nyamayenje cell, Southern Division in Rukungiri district. Yasin was traveling from a site located at Mabanga cell, Kebisoni town council, heading towards Kebisoni using the Ndama Nkamba road.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi region Police spokesperson, stated that the collision occurred when the driver reached Kebisoni trading center. Allegedly, the victim, who was said to have a mental disorder and frequently stayed near the roadside, suddenly crossed the road and was struck by the vehicle’s front tire.
According to Maate, the impact resulted in serious injuries, and the victim was rushed to Nyakibale hospital by her father, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Maate added that the accident scene was meticulously examined and documented by a team of traffic officers led by the District Traffic Officer (DTO). Relevant statements were recorded, and the vehicle involved was impounded by the Police pending Inspection of Vehicles (IOV) inspection.
