RUKUNGIRI: Police in Rukungiri District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 19-year-old man who was killed in an accident along the Bugangari-Bikurungu road in Bugangari Sub County.
Elly Maate, the spokesperson for the Kigezi region police, confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Edwin Akoragye, a casual laborer and resident of Nyakinengo Cell, Nyabiteete Parish, in Bugangari Sub County.
The accident occurred on Tuesday around 11:30 AM at Kyomera Trading Center, where Akoragye was struck by a white Isuzu Elf, registered as UAZ 355L. According to Maate, the deceased attempted to board the moving vehicle but stepped on a rolling tire, causing him to fall. Tragically, the tire rolled over him.
Maate said that emergency responders rushed Akoragye to Bugangari Health Centre, where he was pronounced dead.
He revealed that following the incident, the driver drove to Bikurungu Town and handed over the vehicle to another person to deliver it to Bikurungu Police Station, reporting that it had been involved in an accident in Bugangari.
He stated that traffic officers visited the scene to investigate and document the accident, the vehicle is currently parked at Bikurungu Police Station, pending an inspection, and a postmortem examination has been conducted.
