KATAKWI: At least one trader has been reported dead and several others injured after a vehicle traveling from Mbale to Ocorimongin market lost control and veered off the road in Katakwi District.
According to eyewitnesses, the Fuso truck, with registration number UBH 262D, was en route to Ocorimongin market when the accident occurred on Friday morning. Pius Ejukat, the LCI of Kid village, confirmed the incident to this website, stating that it happened around 5 a.m. in Kide village, Abela parish, within Getom Sub County. This area has become a hotspot for accidents in the district.
Ejukat attributed the accident to speeding and overloading. “The vehicle was packed with cabbages, avocados, tomatoes, Irish potatoes, bananas, and other perishable goods, all of which were damaged,” he reported.
Emmanuel Amaitum, a local resident, expressed his frustration over the government’s silence regarding the frequent accidents on this major road. “We have lost so many relatives, friends, in-laws, and others to accidents alone,” Amaitum said.
Hon. David Eilor Kadogo, the Chairman of LCIII in Getom Sub County, acknowledged the increasing danger in Abela parish, which is causing concern among council members. He urged drivers to exercise caution on main roads, noting that accidents have become a daily occurrence. “At the very least, they should install speed bumps from Getom trading center to Katakwi Technical,” Eilor suggested.
Hon. Geoffrey Omolo, the LCV of Katakwi District, emphasized that the state of the roads in the district is now critical.
Irene Nanangwe, the OC Traffic for Katakwi District, confirmed the incident and reassured the community that thorough investigations are underway. She advised road users to remain vigilant, as reckless driving has become increasingly common.
She also mentioned that the Inspectorate of Motor Vehicle unit of the police (IOV) in East Kyoga would conduct inspections as part of the investigation process.
