Police in Kabale District have launched a manhunt for the driver of a Toyota Spacio registration number UAX 316F following a fatal hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a 16-year-old student on Thursday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Mujurizi Oscar, a student at Kigezi High School and a resident of Igabiro Cell, Mwanjari Ward in Southern Division, Kabale Municipality.
According to Kigezi Region Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, the accident happened at around 7:20am along the Kabale–Katuna road in Mwanjari.
It is alleged that both the vehicle and the cyclist were heading in the same direction from Kabale Town towards Katuna when the driver reportedly lost control and knocked the cyclist who was riding ahead of the vehicle.
Oscar died on the spot.
Boda boda riders attempted to pursue the fleeing vehicle but failed to intercept it. However, they managed to capture the vehicle’s registration number, which police are now using to trace the suspect.
Police visited and documented the scene before transferring the body to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.
ASP Maate said investigators are also reviewing CCTV footage from Kabale Town to help identify and arrest the driver.
Preliminary investigations indicate that reckless driving was the primary cause of the accident. Maate said inquiries into the matter are ongoing.
