KISORO: A tragic accident in Kisoro District has claimed the life of a 12-year-old child and left 12 others injured.
Elly Maate, Police Spokesperson for the Kigezi Region, reported that the accident occurred on February 8, 2025, at around 4:20 PM in Mupaka Village, South Ward, Chahafi Town Council, Kisoro District.
The incident involved a Mitsubishi Fuso truck with registration number UBN 328X. The truck, which had been loaded with 60 bags of beans, 13 juveniles, and loaders, was traveling from Gahenerezo and Mupaka villages. As it neared Lake Chahafi, the vehicle struggled to climb a steep hill, causing the driver to lose control. The truck then rolled backward and overturned.
The deceased, 12-year-old Irakoze Bright, was one of the juvenile passengers. The other victims, aged between 8 and 13, sustained various injuries and were taken to Chahafi Health Center IV for treatment. Some were later transferred to Mutorele Hospital for further care.
The injured victims include Bayizere Mark (9), Niyomuchamanza Gerald (12), Murengezi Daudi (9), Iratuzi Nafutari (13), Hakizimana Medard (9), Niyongabo Joab (13), Niyongabo Patrick (8), along with five other victims whose details are still being confirmed.
Maate indicated that preliminary investigations suggest the vehicle’s poor mechanical condition may have played a role in the accident. A post-mortem was carried out on the deceased at Chahafi Health Center IV, and the police continue to investigate the incident.
