One person has been confirmed dead and two others injured following a fatal road accident that occurred along the Rukungiri–Kihihi road in Rukungiri District.
The accident involved a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UER 138G. According to police, the deceased has been identified as Spencer Arinaitwe, 40, a boda boda rider and resident of Nyabubare Cell in Bwambara Sub-county.
The injured victims have been identified as Nkurye Philimon, 70, and Hakiri Brian, 36. Both are peasants and residents of Nyabubare Cell in Bwambara Sub-county.
The incident occurred on Wednesday at around 9:20 PM at Rukondo Cell in Rukungiri Municipality. Police reports indicate that the deceased was transporting the two passengers from a burial ceremony in Nyarushanje Sub-county. Upon reaching Rukondo, the motorcycle reportedly failed to negotiate a corner, lost control, veered off the road, and overturned on the opposite side.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident. He stated that the accident scene was attended to by traffic police officers led by Corporal Natima.
The injured were rushed to Nyakibale Hospital for treatment, while the rider Arinaitwe was taken to the same hospital by first responders but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Maate further noted that the body of the deceased was later transferred to Rwakabengo Health Centre III mortuary for postmortem examination. The motorcycle has been impounded and is currently parked at Rukungiri Central Police Station, pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).
Preliminary investigations attribute the accident to reckless riding and speeding.
