KANUNGU: Police in Kanungu District are currently searching for the driver of a motor vehicle, registration number UBJ 100J, a Hilux double cabin belonging to Kedifise Bank, Kanungu branch that claimed the life of a 40-year-old man along the Kanungu–Kihihi road in Kirima Sub County.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Edson Kayakole, a resident of Katete, Kanungu District. According to Maate, the accident occurred on Sunday at approximately 7:30 PM in Kabashaki cell, along the Kanungu–Kihihi road. The deceased had left his home in Katete Sub County earlier in the day to visit a friend, Sabiti, in Mitoma District.
Maate explained that Kayakole was last seen leaving Sabiti’s residence around 6:00 PM and disappeared to an unknown location. At around 7:30 PM, while reportedly intoxicated and walking in the middle of the road, Kayakole was struck by the speeding vehicle. He sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Katate Health Centre IV, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Maate noted that Police were notified of the incident on Monday by Mukwatangabo Habib Twaha, an employee of Kedifise Bank, the scene was inspected and documented, the motor vehicle involved has since been impounded for further investigation, and the driver remains at large, with police efforts underway to apprehend them.
He said that Postmortem was conducted, and the body has been handed over to the family for a decent burial.
