Speeding Motorcycle Kills 4-Year-Old Boy in Rukungiri

A tragic accident in Rukungiri District on Thursday afternoon claimed the life of a four-year-old boy after he was knocked by a speeding motorcycle.

The incident occurred at around 4:00 p.m. in Runyamunyu Cell, Bugangari Parish, Bugangari Sub-county, along the Rukungiri–Kihihi road.

According to police, the accident involved a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle registration number UFT 634K, ridden by Amanya Ian, 20, a resident of Mugamba Cell, Eastern Ward in Rukungiri Municipality.

The deceased was identified as Johnvian Owomugisha, a son of Denis Tukwasibwe, a resident of Runyamunyu Cell in Bugangari Sub-county.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the rider was heading from Rukungiri towards Kihihi at high speed while carrying two milk cans when he hit the child, who was crossing the road. Despite attempts to avoid the boy, the motorcycle knocked him, causing both the rider and the child to fall.

The victim was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after. Police officers visited and documented the scene, and the motorcycle has been impounded at Rukungiri Central Police Station pending inspection. A postmortem was also conducted.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson attributed the cause of the accident to over-speeding and careless pedestrian crossing.

He said that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
