Kabale District Local Government has handed over a motorcycle to agricultural extension workers in Maziba Sub-county and commissioned one tonne of improved bean seed to boost agricultural production and extension services.
The motorcycle and bean seed were procured under the Agriculture Extension Services programme during the 2025/26 financial year.
Kabale Principal Agriculture Officer and Acting District Production Officer Deus Baguma Bagambana said the Production Department has 24 extension workers, eight of whom lack means of transport to facilitate their field activities.
He said the motorcycle was allocated to extension workers in Maziba Sub-county to ease transport challenges and enable them to reach farmers more effectively.
Baguma said the district also procured one tonne of improved bean seed from the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) at Namulonge for distribution to farmer groups.
He said the improved seed is intended to address diseases affecting existing bean varieties and improve productivity among farmers.

Kabale Chief Administrative Officer Robert Mugabe said the motorcycle cost Shs18.6 million, while the one tonne of improved bean seed cost Shs7.5 million.
Mugabe said inadequate transport facilities have continued to affect agricultural extension services, but added that the district expects to receive additional motorcycles from development partners and through the Uganda Climate Smart Agriculture Transformation Project.

Kabale District LCV Chairperson Denis Nzeirwe Ndyomugyenyi urged the district to prioritise the purchase of quality motorcycles capable of navigating the district’s hilly terrain.
He also cautioned extension workers against misusing the motorcycles, urging them to exercise discipline and observe road safety to avoid accidents.

Nzeirwe said the district would continue prioritising transport facilities for extension workers because of their role in implementing government programmes and delivering agricultural services to farmers.
“Extension workers are at the centre of implementing government programmes, and agriculture remains a backbone of Uganda’s economy,” he said.

Presiding over the commissioning and handover, Kabale Resident District Commissioner Maj Godfrey Katamba called for proper use and maintenance of the motorcycle and other district vehicles.
Katamba welcomed the district’s decision to procure its own equipment, saying adequate transport facilities were essential for effective service delivery.
He said his benchmarking visits to other districts had shown that local governments could invest in vehicles and motorcycles to strengthen service delivery.
